Carry Akroyd SWLA

Known for her use of vibrant colours and bold composition, Carry’s work often depicts the broad patchwork landscapes of rural East Anglia, and the diverse natural life which inhabits the area. She is accomplished in the use of paints and pastels, but is best known for her serigraphy (screenprinting,) so much of her time is spent with scissors and scalpels, cutting paper stencils for use in the printmaking process.

She lives not far from where she grew up, on the border between Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire, and naturally this area is a large source of inspiration for her artwork. Her passion for the poetry of John Clare has also come to be a big influence, as she shares his fascination with the ways in which the activities of man shape the natural world, for better or worse. For this reason she doesn’t shy away from using her art to remind us how we influence the landscape around us, whether with roads, wind turbines, or even the military aircraft which are such a regular sight in the skies of East Anglia.

She became a member of the Society of Wildlife artists in 2000 and has been involved with a number of their conservation projects, in collaboration with the Wildlife Trusts and the Forestry Commission. Her work has featured in various publications over the years, including a few of her own books, and she illustrates the regular Bird of the Month column in The Oldie magazine.

As well as here at Birdscapes, her work has appeared in various collections including the Northampton Museum, and has even been used to create colourful murals on the wards of several hospitals.
